BEACHES OF SOUTH WALTON NAMED AMONG FROMMER’S TOP DESTINATIONS FOR 2010
WALTON COUNTY, Fla. –Dec. 14, 2009— Frommer’s, one of the most popular sources of online and print travel guides and information, ranked Beaches of South Walton and the Florida Panhandle as one of the Top 12 Destinations for 2010.
Author for Frommer’s Florida, Leslie Abravenel, recognizes the area as “some of the most diverse recreation choices along Florida's drastically under-appreciated Gulf coast, and some of the best options for visitors seeking an affordable family vacation.” She goes on to point out “there's really something for everyone. Seaside's planned community is so "perfect" it was the setting for the The Truman Show, yet you'll also find old-school Florida towns with funky shops, tiny hotels, pristine beaches, and the perfect cottage to rent.”
“Leslie did a magnificent job of painting a picture of this region,” said Tracy Louthain, director of communications at the Beaches of South Walton Tourist Development Council (TDC). “When we hosted Leslie last spring in Seaside, we never imagined that we would make her top picks list. We are truly honored to be included among such a prestigious list of destinations.”
Beaches of South Walton, a collection of 15 beach communities along coast, has been gaining notoriety for its sugar white sand beaches and emerald green water. The area is also being discovered by culinary travelers who are looking for an authentic local experience. Award-winning eateries offering creative delicacies ranging from succulent roast garlic seared yellow-fin tuna to Florida Hopper Shrimp served with Southern-style grits express the personality of the region through the use of locally-sourced ingredients, including fresh gulf caught seafood.
Beyond the beach, Beaches of South Walton has much to explore. With four state parks and a state forest, miles and miles of trails beckon travelers to commune with nature. South Walton is also home to the largest concentration of coastal dune lakes in the world, which are ideal for canoeing, kayaking, fishing and the area’s newest recreational activity, YOLO boarding. Other recreational activities include golfing on one of 12 top rated courses, outlet, designer and boutique shopping, gallery tours, spa services, biking, and horseback riding.
“The timing of this recognition is impeccable as we prepare to open a new international airport in Panama City Beach in May 2010,” said Sonny Mares, executive director of the Beaches of South Walton TDC. “The new airport—and more competitive air service—will fulfill a critical need, providing travelers direct access to Northwest Florida and to our beautiful beaches, collection of beach communities and breadth of recreational activities.”
From cozy beachside cottages to a world class resorts, Beaches of South Walton visitors will experience the peaceful elegance of its communities. For more information on Beaches of South Walton call 1-800-822-6877.
