The Clean Beaches Council (CBC) is a not-for-profit organization devoted
to sustaining America’s Beaches. Since its inception in 1998, CBC has
developed innovative approaches to coastal management and protection
of human health and the environment. Their fundamental program is the
Blue Wave Campaign, America’s first environmental certification program
for healthy beaches.
This program is to promote public awareness and voluntary participation
in beach sustainability. Blue Wave beaches pledge to uphold responsible
beach management practices including: water quality, beach and intertidal
conditions, safety, services, habitat conservation, public information/
education and erosion management. Participating beaches proudly fly
the Blue Wave flag.
Beaches of South Walton is a proud recipient of the Blue Wave Flag –
the only county in the nation to have all of its beaches Blue Wave certified.
With the help of our friend Seemore the Safety Crab, Walton County
is always committed to beach safety. Our flag system tells visitors and
residents when it’s safe to get in the water. The flag system was adopted to
indicate surf conditions and to keep visitors out of harm’s way when
conditions aren’t safe. Our flag system uses the same colors as the Department
of Environmental Protection (DEP). The color system is as follows:

Be sure to take note of this flag system and be aware of the
conditions before you venture into the water. Signs are posted
throughout the beach areas as a reminder to tell you whether
or not it’s safe to get in. And like Seemore always says, know
before you go!
