natural wonders
Discover diverse ecological communities - including beach dunes, mesic flatwoods, scrub, depression marshes, and coastal dune lakes.
The area’s 15 coastal dune lakes are bodies of water separated from the Gulf of Mexico by dunes ranging from 10 to 30 feet in height. They have been identified as globally rare and imperiled by the Florida Natural Areas Inventory (FNAI). Similar ecosystems can only be found in the Madagascar, Australia, New Zealand, and the Northwest Pacific Coast of the United States. These fragile ecosystems are an important source of freshwater to migrating birds and other beach organisms. Another wonder is Choctawhatchee Bay, which boasts some of the rarest wildlife in the state.
